In the first semi-final of the Men’s EHF EURO 2022 day, Denmark took on Spain, who had a last-minute casualty, right-wing Ferran Soler, who tested positive, while Denmark presented full strength. The duo’s refereeing for this great match was the Macedonians Slave Nikolov and Gjorgji Nachevski.
A strange start to the game, where both teams showed some anxiety, committing several turnovers, which is not usual. However, in 10 minutes of the match, Denmark was leading 2:3 despite the four turnovers, taking their biggest lead of the game with four goals at 18 and 21 minutes of the first half. However, Spain started to show signs of improvement and took advantage of Niklas Landin’s exclusion in the 26th minute to increase their lead. This way, the advantage at halftime was only one goal for Denmark, where they had already been forced to apply 7:6, considering the difficulties that the Spanish defense was putting on the Danish attack.
At halftime, Niklas Landin, with seven saves, made the difference in the game. Still, the main Danish problem was in the positional attack, where they could only manage 44% effectiveness and in the poor use of attacks in numerical superiority. Denmark had a shooting efficiency of 67% in finishing, whereas Rasmus Lauge Smith, Mikkel Hansen and Mathias Gidsel lacked the inspiration to solve the offensive problems.
Thus, it was hoped that the break would do the team led by Nikolaj Jacobsen some good, but the worst came early in the second half.
It was a terrible start to the second half, continuing a performance that had suffered at the end of the first half, where Spain went in at full throttle, more enlightened, and by the 41st minute, they were already in front. From that moment on, Denmark disappeared from the game while Spain stabilized on a two-goal lead.
Denmark tried everything offensively with the 7:6, but at the other end, the Spanish Perez de Vargas closed the goal and made a great display. At the same time, the Danish stars were slow to shine, and their aspirations to reach the final of the EHF Euro 2022 were falling apart. At the end of the game, Denmark would be defeated by 29:24.
In statistical terms, Denmark’s defeat is explained by their 29% effectiveness in positional attack and their 40% effectiveness in numerical superiority attack. In terms of attacking transitions, Denmark’s strong point was very well nullified by Spain, with Denmark only managing to finish successfully four times in ten attempts. In terms of shooting, Denmark only managed twenty-five goals from forty-four shots. However, Niklas Landin had a good game with twelve saves from thirty-one shots, thus finishing with an efficiency of 31%.
This way, compared to Spain, Denmark was only superior in the 7 meters shots and fast attacks. On the other hand, in terms of positional attack, they suffered a lot from the lackluster play of Mathias Gidsel and Mikkel Hansen.
Denmark had not lost since 2015 against Spain, and this is the second heaviest Danish defeat in history against Spain, only surpassed by the 1999 World Cup defeat by 31:17.
Niklas Landin – ♥♥♥♥
He was the best Dane on the pitch with eleven saves, being ruled out on a strange throw.
Mikkel Hansen – ♥♥♥
He was not at his best in the longshots and with five turnovers in a less positive game. However, he finished the game with eight goals on thirteen shots and seven assists.
Magnus Landin – ♥♥♥
A reasonable game that was marred by two missed shots from his specific post in the last fifteen minutes.
Lasse Svan – ♥♥♥
He was one of the reasonably good players, where he delivered when called upon.
Mathias Gidsel – ♥♥♥
An underwhelming game with three goals, two assists, a turnover and a steal.
Rasmus Lauge Schmidt – ♥♥♥
He was on the pitch for only 22 minutes, playing a reasonable game.
Mads Mensah – ♥♥♥
A hard working, versatile player who is not in the best physical condition. Today with his physical power, he tried to fight against a tough Spanish team, and at times, he created some imbalances.
Simon Hold – ♥♥♥
In the last minutes, he was used in the 7:6 and managed to finish successfully in the only opportunity and participated in the defensive processes but without achieving anything different.
Kevin Møller – ♥♥
He came in during a less good period for Niklas Landin but did not go beyond one save in ten minutes of play.
Magnus Saugstrup – ♥♥
Not a very happy game. He struggled a lot defensively and offensively was not on a good day.
Henrik Møllgaard – ♥♥
For 22 minutes, he was in the defensive processes of Denmark but without practical results.
Emil Jakobsen – ♥♥
He had a discrete game, one exclusion and wasted the two opportunities he had during the twenty-two minutes on the pitch.
